It was developed by Robert Bosch GmbH during the late 1960s under the supervision of Dr. G\u00fcnter Bauman.\n<p><figure style=\"width: 485px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.carid.com\/images\/articles\/oxygen-sensor-why-does-my-car-have-four\/heated-oxygen-sensor.jpg\" alt=\"Inside an O2 Sensor\" width=\"485\" height=\"317\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inside an O2 Sensor<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Common Symptoms<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A failed oxygen sensor (O2 or lambda sensor<b>)\u00a0<\/b>may cause the vehicle to fail an emissions test. The failed sensor will cause a trouble code to be set and the Check Engine Light to illuminate.<\/li>\n<li>Oxygen sensors can fail if they are contaminated with oil, coolant, or silicone. If fluid contamination has caused an oxygen sensor failure, the source of the fluid must be resolved or the new sensor may be ruined.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Common Misdiagnoses<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>There are many things can be traced back\u00a0to\u00a0a oxygen sensor trouble code, even if\u00a0the sensor is working correctly.<\/li>\n<li>Simply changing one or all\u00a0sensors for a oxygen sensor code may not help your issue.<\/li>\n<li>Maintenance and tune up issues can cause exhaust gas to read incorrectly causing a diagnostic trouble code (DTC).<\/li>\n<li>Exhaust leaks or unmetered air entering the exhaust system.<\/li>\n<li>Intake and exhaust leaks can trigger an oxygen sensor trouble code.
